Project BurnSafe™ is a comprehensive digital media library of fire and burn injury prevention materials designed to be used in a variety of settings with diverse audiences. Funded in part by grants from United States Fire Administation/FEMA*, BurnSafe™ is a collaborative project between the Burn Foundation, medical professionals, the fire services, and corporate partners committed to burn and fire prevention.
An estimated 700,000 people in the U.S. receive medical treatment for fire and burn injuries annually, and 4,500 die from these injuries. A severe burn affects more than just the injured patient: family members, fire and emergency personnel, burn care professionals, teachers, employers, friends and others are involved in the treatment and recovery process. While fire and burn injury is an ever-present danger in our lives, knowledge and instruction about causes, prevention and treatment has been elusive.
Information is scarce. Most of us are unfamiliar with the wide range of burn injury hazards and the physical, psychological and social impact of a severe burn. The good news is that most burns are preventable. People from all walks of life can benefit from the knowledge of how to prevent, treat and the process of recovery from a burn injury. In addition to knowledge, effective prevention requires enhanced awareness of risks and the development of skills to avoid injury.
When a person is injured by a severe burn, their family and social network is thrown into crisis. Few of us not directly affected can appreciate the wide-ranging impact such an injury can make. Patients and families faced with severe injuries require support and education about how to take care of themselves while caring for their loved one. As families rise to the challenge many patients emerge from treatment with the same or a better quality of life than they experienced before their injury.
BurnSafe™ closes the information gap. Emphasizing an evolving style of learning and utilizing state of the art production and distribution technology, the Burn Foundation has produced a comprehensive digital video library of fire and burn injury prevention materials intended for multiple audiences, skill levels, and learning environments. The series, BurnSafe™ is designed to bring education and information to a broader range of recipients including school age children, youth groups/organizations, senior adults, families and community groups.
